Cap, Service, Enlisted Man's
The olive drab peaked service cap was worn with the Class A service uniform until 1941. It has a brass disc with the U.S. Coat of Arms for a cap device and russet leather (to match the service shoes) bill and chin strap. This hat is a signature look for pre-war and even early-war dress functions, however some soldiers actually retained these hats (or purchased them) after it was replaced by the Garrison Cap in February, 1941.
While we often say that buying items appropriate for early war should be the habit for new recruits, this is one item that you can skip over (provided you have a Garrison Cap). Service Caps can be expensive and often difficult to find in the right size. To add more difficulties, the leather items can be come brittle and damaged if not cared for after 60+ years, the moths have a field day with the wool, and sometimes the wire frame becomes so corroded or bent, it's not worth it. Most folks just did not take good care of these caps. However, if you come across one that fits and for the right price, it's a good look to have and is suitable just about any dress function.
